Just One Year

by Erin on September 4, 2010 · 1 comment

A year ago today, I sat down at my desk at work, bit into a bacon cheeseburger, and nearly lost the lunch I’d barely started eating.  Over the next several hours, I slowly started to put it all together.  I’d been exhausted for weeks, my sense of smell had reached superpower status, and I’d been craving taco bell with reckless abandon.   How had I not noticed sooner?  By the time I got home from work, I was convinced.  I took a test, and sure enough:

Two lines.  Who knew those two little words together could change so many things?

Adam was at an appointment when I found out.  The next half hour seemed to go on for days.  By the time he got home, I was so wound up that he barely got a chance to get in the door before I told him I had to show him something.

“look at this”

“what is that?”

“two lines”

“what the heck does that mean?”

I could not believe he was not getting it.  I had had nearly forty minutes to process, and was expecting him to catch up in a matter of about seven seconds.  I should have given him more time, once he realized what was going on, he said “does this mean we aren’t getting a boat?” -the first of many funny comments over the course of the pregnancy.  Lovely, huh?

Within an hour, we were out processing, Adam-style:

As the afternoon sun set, things started to sink in.  We were having a baby.  A real, live, human baby.  Who am I kidding, she’s been here for four months, and it STILL hasn’t sunk in.  Does it ever?

Over the course of the next eight-ish months, we got to experience all kinds of fun things.  Here are the highlights:

  • Morning Sickness.  Ick.
  • A six week bout of H1N1.
  • A week in Las Vegas (SO not the same without cocktails & night clubs! Still a great time though.)
  • Endless doctors appointments.
  • Lots of Taco Bell
  • And Dairy Queen
  • The indescribable feeling of hearing her heart beat and seeing her via ultrasound.
  • Back pain.  Oh, the back pain.
  • An extra week of pregnancy.
  • An easy induction turned emergency c-section.
  • A true knot in the umbilical cord.
  • A beautiful, healthy baby girl.
  • Postpartum hypertension.
  • Four fun, exhausting months.

And here we are!

Jumperoo!

September 2, 2010

The past few weeks Alaina has discovered her lower half -holding her feet, kicking, and most recently, trying to stand.  She wants to be “up” all the time these days, either sitting or standing on whomever is holding her.  We are very fortunate to have been blessed with the BEST. NEIGHBORS. EVER. -Proven again by [...]
