Wow… Just. Wow.
I put off reading the Twilight series of books for a long time -novels about vampires written for teens? Right. I don’t so much fit the demographic. After the urging of several friends who’s opinions I trust completely, I agreed to try the first book. About three pages in to the first book, I was hooked. I have joined the ranks of women all over this country with an unhealthy love for pale, cold, bloodsucking high school students, and I’m only a little ashamed of myself for it.
The friends that convinced me to start reading this book are some amazing women. We met through
work, and have stayed friends through pregnancies, maternity leave, and cross-state moves. We even found out about a new baby on the way before the movie! Congratulations Jess! We can’t wait to meet the newest addition, who will forever be associated with our first movie date! I am currently the last woman standing in the office full time, and miss the girls so much. Our love of these books caused us all to put the craziness of our lives on hold this past Friday, and meet in a central location to see the Twilight movie. Yup, four twenty-somethings in Colorado drove hours to meet up for appetizers and a screening of a movie about vampires. And we loved every minute of it! In fact, it was such a great time, that we’ve decided to meet every other or every third month to do this. Alright ladies, I said it on the Internet, now we’ve got to keep to it!
Ok, back on track…
We are all avid readers. We know what can happen when Hollywood gets ahold of a great story. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it becomes an epic disaster. That being said, we were all very apprehensive about what this film would do to our opinions of Edward, Bella, and the rest of the residents of Forks, WA. We were also concerned about Edward. We’d all imagined him as something different than the Edward in the previews. Hotter, more smoldering, I don’t know, just different than what we saw.
Five minutes into the film, we knew we’d worried over nothing. Some people are unhappy with the adaptation, but I think it was great. The movie captured the teen angst, the intensity, and the personalities of the characters with just enough comedy to make them all loveable. And Edward, ohmigod, Edward. We felt like dirty old cougars lusting after a young high school boy. Wow. As the movie progressed, his character became more likable, and much more attractive. Women in the theater were screaming when he came on the screen in the beginning, and gasping towards the end. There were a few effects that were a bit on the cheesey side, but all in all, the movie was an excellent depiction of the book. The characters all started out a creepy shade of pale (I know they’re undead, but ick..), as the movie progressed, they seemed to warm up a bit, and get some color. I’m sure this was done to help connect the audience to the characters, and make them seem more attractive. Worked for me! Edward was smoldering, Bella was awkward and nervous, Alice was pixielike and adorable, and Rosalie was cold and bitchy. Bella’s father was an unexpected favorite for me, awkward like Bella, with a touch of humor. I don’t want to turn this post into a movie review/book report, but go see it, it has been two days, and we’re still hot from it!
